M&FP - Counseling Services


Counseling Services, consisting of the Victim Advocates program and the Family Advocacy Program (FAP), provide a variety of programs and services to military members and their families to enhance life skills and improve their quality of life. This mission is accomplished through a variety of seminars, workshops, treatment groups, counseling, and interventions services. Individual, marital and family counseling, provided by licensed professionals, is available by appointment.

SECOND STEP: COUNSELING
Family Advocacy Program (FAP)

In addition to Counseling Services, the Family Advocacy Program is dedicated to the prevention, education, reporting, intervention and treatment of domestic violence.


Our Family Advocacy Program has a highly-qualified, licensed clinical staff, trained in family violence and are available to provide counseling services at your request.


Family Advocacy professionals are also available to assist commanders and other leaders with various trainings, briefings, and workshops to aid in domestic violence prevention.


The MCBH Family Advocacy Program currently has numerous materials available for commanders, individuals and families including videos, reading materials and more.

RESTRICTED VS. UNRESTRICTED REPORTING – What is It?

 

  • Restricted Reporting
  • Unrestricted Reporting

NOTE: If domestic or sexual abuse is disclosed to someone other than a FAP victim advocate or a Marine & Family Programs Clinical Counselor, or a Military Medicine contact (defined below), it may result in command FAP notification and law enforcement investigation.


What is Restricted Reporting?
A victim may disclose domestic abuse to certain individuals without command, law enforcement of Family Advocacy Program (FAP) notification and will still be able to access information, support, advocacy and medical care. Any adult eligible to receive military medical treatment may make a restricted report of sexual or domestic abuse by a spouse, former spouse, intimate partner or former intimate partner.


NOTE: If domestic or sexual abuse is disclosed to someone other than a FAP victim advocate or a Marine & Family Programs Clinical Counselor, or a Military Medicine contact (defined below), it may result in command FAP notification and law enforcement investigation.


Who do I go to for Restricted Reporting?

Military Medicine – any person authorized to provide direct patient care in military medical/dental facilities.
Exceptions:

  • When there is an imminent threat to health or safety of the victim or another person.
  • When child abuse is suspected
  • When required for fitness for duty in disability retirement boards
  • For supervision of direct victim treatment or services
  • When a military, federal, or state judge issues a subpoena
  • When required by federal or state statute or applicable international agreement
Victims of domestic abuse who want to pursue an official investigation of an incident should use current reporting channels, PMO/Law enforcement, Chain of Command, Chaplain, Family Advocacy Program (FAP). Upon notification of a domestic abuse incident, victim advocacy services and FAP clinical services will be made available.

 

Groups, Classes & Workshops

Cage the Rage: Anger Management Class
All of us suffer from stress at some level. the Cage the Rage series teaches how to effectively manage stress and understand and control anger. Classes are ongoing, with six sessions in each series. You can start anytime. Orientation is required prior to your first class.

Marriage Skills Workshop
Presented every month, this couples workshop explains the fundamentals of being a successful military
family. Subjects include couples communication, budgeting and finances, where to find helpful resources and

Building Healthy Relationships
This eight-session, psycho-educational group develops knowledge in self-awareness, assertiveness, communication, listening, stress management, conflict resolution and more. Open to all active duty members and spouses, each session targets a different subject.

Prevention & Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP)
PREP is a one-day couples communication and problem-solving workshop offered at the MCBH Chapel. Participating couples receive a copy of the book "Fighting for Your Marriage," two PREP one-day notes for couples, and a magnetic speaker/listener technique floor tile. Materials and lunch are provided at no cost.
